Quick Energy Tips
These quick energy tips can help you reduce electric usage in your home.

  • During the summer months, set your thermostat at the highest comfortable setting. Progress Energy recommends a setting of 78-80. You can save 7 to 10 percent on your cooling costs for each degree above 78.

  • Use ceiling or portable fans to supplement your air-conditioning in occupied rooms.

  • During the winter months, set your thermostat at the lowest comfortable setting. Progress Energy recommends a setting of 68-70. You can save 7 to 10 percent on your heating costs for each degree below 70.

  • To increase your heating and cooling system efficiency, replace or clean system filters monthly and do not block registers and return vents with furniture or drapes.

  • If your furnace or air conditioner is over 10 years old, consider replacing it with an energy-efficient heat pump.

  • Make sure your home is properly insulated. Progress Energy recommends R-19 to R-30 insulation for ceilings, R-11 for floors (suspended frame only), R-11 for frame walls and R-5 for concrete block.

  • Reduce hot water used for washing clothes.

  • Install low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators to reduce hot water use.

  • Switch to fluorescent bulbs for areas of constant use, such as the kitchen.

  • Turn off all small electrical equipment, such as radios, VCRs or TVs when not in use.
  • Turn off the lights when leaving an empty room.
  • If you have a fireplace, close the damper when not in use.
  • Use your microwave or countertop appliances for cooking instead of your stove or oven.
